Vesak which is the traditional name given to the fifth month of the year in Sri Lanka, marks the biggest annual Buddhist celebration of the isle. In southern Buddhist lore, birth, enlightenment & extinction of Lord Buddha fall on the full moon day of the fifth month, Vesak. Thus, Sri Lankans rejoice by celebrating Vesak festival by conducting and attending observances and venerations, giving of alms, illuminating streets and buildings with lanterns. Poets have versed the scenic beauty of a Vesak eve as though the heavens have appeared on the earth.
